Als Reaktion auf die wachsende Kapazitätsnachfrage fügten Unternehmen immer mehr Server hinzu, bis keine Skaleneffekte mehr möglich waren. Die Servervirtualisierung ermöglichte eine Konsolidierung und dämmte die Kosten ein, weil Hardware und Software nun grundlegend geparst und Ressourcen in der gesamten Umgebung dynamisch zugewiesen wurden. Durch die Konsolidierung der physischen Server stieg die Effizienz im IT-Netzwerk deutlich an, was sich unter anderem in einer verbesserten Ressourcenauslastung bei CPU und Speicher äußerte.
